Research

Nurses are challenged to expand their practice by offering creative approaches to old and new health problems. It has become every nurse’s responsibility to engage in one or more roles along a continuum of research participation. The current emphasis is on evidence based nursing practice which requires nurse to base their clinical practice to a great extent to improve the health care. Research generates new knowledge, thereby promoting evidence based practice and quality improvement.
Govt. College of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram has been recognized as the research centre of Kerala University on 25th October, 2009. It is also an approved study centre for PhD National Consortium under Indian Nursing Council and WHO since 2005. For planning ahead and carrying out the activities of the Research Centre, a Research Committee was constituted on 24th February, 2009 and an Institutional Ethics Committee was formulated in the year 2011. In 2019 the institution was recognized as a Ph.D center under Kerala University of Health Sciences.

Research Activities

  • 11 faculty members are doing PhD under Kerala University of Health sciences and 1 under National Consortium ( Indian Nursing Council)
  • 7 Faculty members are doing PhD under University outside Kerala.
  • “The Journal of Nursing Updates” is the quarterly research journal publication from the institution.
  • Faculty members are doing research project utilizing research funding from SBMR.
  • M.Sc Nursing students are getting research funds from Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE)
  • Conducting monthly journal club
  • Faculty members are actively participating in international, national and state conferences as resource persons and as delegates and presenting papers and posters
  • Academic Research of Postgraduate, Undergraduate and Diploma courses are guided by the faculty of College of Nursing.
  • Research related topics and classes by experts are scheduled for faculty.
  • Every year 39 postgraduate thesis and undergraduate projects are being accomplished by the students, which is a real asset for the institution.
  • SBMR Funded Projects

    State Board of Medical Research is providing financial assistance for holding continuing medical education programme, seminars, symposiums and workshops on topic relevant to health problems of the state. Grants are sanctioned for the paper/ thesis presentation. A few faculty members are doing projects under SBMR fund.

  • National Consortium:

    National Consortium for PhD Nursing or PhD consortium has been constituted by Indian Nursing Council in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi University, Karnataka, for the faculty of nursing to promote doctoral education. Government College of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram, is a recognized research centre under INC National Consortium. Video conferencing facilities are provided for PhD aspirants at the conference hall of this college.

     
  • The Nursing Research Centre

    The Nursing Research Unit of this College is based upon specific objectives to strengthen the scientific body of knowledge of professional nursing. The unit has scientific activities like journal club, conference and scientific meets. The Nursing Research Unit publishes a quarterly journal “The Journal of Nursing Updates”.

  • Emeritus Scientist Scheme:

    Kerala State Council for Science, technology and Environment (KSCSTE) helps to provide support to superannuated outstanding scientists to pursue research in their respective field of specialization. Kerala Emeritus Scientist Scheme (KESS) aims at utilization of their talents and use their experience in addressing important state level issues. Dr. Kochuthresiamma Thomas M.Sc (N), PhD, Former Principal, DDNE and Registrar was selected as Emeritus Scientist by KSCSTE in 2014, as the first Emeritus Scientist in the field of Nursing Education. Under the KESS, one full- time research fellow can be registered in one of the universities in Kerala. Accordingly, Mrs. Asha Raj S M.Sc (N) has completed Junior Research Fellow under the guidance of Emeritus Scientist and registered under University of Kerala with the research centre, Government College of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram.
    This research centre is a boon for all the budding researchers and those who wish to widen their base in the field of research. We proudly claim that it is the hard work, focused vision, dedication and systematic approach by each and every member of the institution that deepen the roots of the centre. We wish that our centre will be a centre for excellence in the years to come
