AIMS
- To ensure quality education towards preparing competent midwives.
- To prepare all students with necessary knowledge and skill in order to provide high quality comprehensive nursing care to healthy and high risk antenatal, intranatal and postnatal mothers, newborn and women with gynecological problems in various setting.
- To actively participate in various research activities in the field obstetrical and gynecological nursing focusing evidence based nursing practice.
OVERVIEW
The Department of OBG Nursing is one of the Clinical Nursing Specialty department of the Government College of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram. It provides courses in Obstetrical and Gynecological Nursing with theoretical and practical elements to undergraduate and postgraduate students. We ensure effective and efficient services to our student community & enable them to function as independent midwifery practitioners, educators, managers and researchers in the field of OBG Nursing.
ACTIVITIES
The activity of the Department includes:
- Training of General Nursing and Midwifery, B.Sc Nursing, Post Basic B.Sc Nursing , Post Basic Diploma in Speciality Nursing (Midwifery practitioner) & M.Sc. Nursing students to develop knowledge & skill in Obstetrics & Gyneocology Nursing.
- Observes International Midwife Day, Breast Feeding Week, etc. by conducting scientific session, exhibitions and Health education.
- Conducts continuing nursing education sessions, webinars.
- Participate actively towards promotion of independent and collaborative research in all areas related to of women’s health, reproductive health of adolescent girls and new born.
- Procure and monitor utilization of resources, for effective functioning of department.
- Incorporate Evidence based Nursing practice.
- Guides the undergraduates & postgraduates in conducting projects.
- Extend professional services to community.
- Participates in the College development activities.
- Participates in infection control activities and health education sessions in relation to COVID-19
- Special duties like COVID -19 surveillance duty, COVID duties in OPD’s and clinics.
- Participates in online webinars.

LAB FACILITIES
Set up in a vision to provide the students a realistic simulated clinical environment to practice and demonstrate competency of nursing skills needed for care of women and new-born. The infrastructure of the lab includes facilities for doing demonstrations, conducting education sessions and storing different articles, models and instruments used in Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing.
The Departmental Lab is well equipped with Birthing Simulators, Gynaecological and IUD Simulator , Obstetric manikins, Pelvis, Fetal Skull, Various Obstetrical Instruments, different kinds of Models etc. These all help the students to acquire Knowledge & skills in patient care that are to be practiced in clinical settings.
